Certainly, Washington, D.C. is best known for being the capital of the United States, but it is also a great city for fitness enthusiasts. Residents often enjoy running along the National Mall even if it means dodging tourists. For the cycling lover, there is also Rock Creek Park which has 11 miles of paved bike routes. Capital Crescent Trail is another great running, cycling and hiking location. The trail runs from Georgetown to the suburbs of Bethesda, MD and parallels the Potomac River. If your favorite fitness activity involves a sport, you can check out the Thurgood Marshall Recreation Center which has baseball fields, basketball courts and a public pool. Gyms like Bally's Total Fitness and Gold's Gym also have locations in Washington, D.C. Additionally there are the 24 tennis courts at the East Potomac Park Tennis Center and the adjacent East Potomac Park Golf Course both located on the 300 acre peninsula between the Washington Channel and the Potomac River.
